The Cradle Will Rock is a 1999 film adaptation of the 1930’s Broadway play “The Cradle Will Rock”, which was directed by Orson Welles and produced by John Houseman. Partially
The musical is an allegory about corruption and corporate greed and includes a panoply of societal figures. Set in “Steeltown, USA”, it follows the efforts of Larry Foreman to organize local workers and combat wicked, greedy businessman Mr. Mister, who controls the town’s factory, press, church and social organization. The play is almost entirely sun, giving it an operatic quality.
This year, an opera version of Cradle Will Rock is debuting at Opera Saratoga. We thought it would be fun to show the original film as well; the screening is free, so come see the film version, before or after you see the opera!
One screening only: July 15, 4:30 pm.
