Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on an island owned and inhabited by the powerful yet dysfunctional Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder--and that the killer is a member of the family. He hires disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the titular tattooed and troubled computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to look into it. The pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders, and start to unravel a dark family history....
